SEO and local SEO case studies: 6 small businesses and what changed

These case studies show what SEO and Google Maps work did for six small businesses: a retail showroom, a steel supplier, a steel products website, a home appliance brand, a car accessories store and an online school. Each one includes the starting point, what we changed and the numbers from the client’s own Google accounts.

  • Numbers from Search Console and Business Profile.
  • The starting point, not just the peak.
  • Client names withheld until they approve.

Search Marketing Lead at SME Solution

I’d rather show you a few honest numbers than a wall of logos. Every one of these started the same way: an audit of the profile or site and of the businesses ranking above it.

All six clients are in Vietnam, where SME Solution has worked for six years. Google Business Profile and Google Search work the same way in every country, so the methods carry over to the US, Canada, Australia or the UK; what changes is the list of local directories and review habits, which we research for each market. Names are withheld until each client approves publication in English.

A quick guide to the numbers: calls, direction requests and website clicks come from the Google Business Profile performance report; clicks and impressions come from Google Search Console. We report the same metrics to every client.

Before and after organic clicks per month: steel products supplier 63 to 2,342 in 10 months; water heater and kitchen brand 2,741 to 6,897 in 10 months; car accessories store up 458% in 8 months
Organic clicks per month, from the clients’ Search Console accounts.

Case 1: retail showroom, Google Maps and Google Ads

Starting point: a retail showroom that relied on walk-in traffic and wanted more people to find it on Google Maps.

What we did: optimized the Google Business Profile (categories, products, photos, hours), set up a review routine, and ran a Performance Max campaign linked to the profile so ads could appear on Maps.

Bar chart of a retail store's Google Business Profile actions May to September 2026: 1,934 interactions, 1,367 direction requests, 403 website clicks, 164 calls
Google Business Profile actions, May–September 2026.
Metric Result Period
Calls from the profile 164 May–Sep 2026
Direction requests 1,367 May–Sep 2026
Website clicks 403 May–Sep 2026
Performance Max conversions (calls, directions, store visits) 480, at about 4,751 VND each 30 days, Sep–Oct 2026

Lesson: direction requests outnumbered calls more than eight to one. For a showroom, the map listing is effectively the front door, so photos, hours and the pin location matter as much as rankings.

Case 2: steel supplier, from almost invisible to the top 3 on Maps

Starting point: buyers search Google Maps for suppliers near their building sites, but this supplier barely appeared on the map, and its main keywords were outside the top 50. New customers came almost entirely from referrals.

What we did: completed the profile with real photos of the warehouse, office and products, asked past customers for reviews, built local pages around product-plus-area searches, and targeted long, specific searches such as a product size plus a district, which have little competition but come from buyers ready to order.

Before After about 6 months
Barely visible on Google Maps Top 3 on Google Maps for most related searches in its area
Main keywords outside the top 50 Organic traffic about 3 times higher, focused on buying keywords
Customers mostly from referrals About 30–50 calls a month from Google Maps

Lesson: in a trade business, specific searches like “product + size + area” convert far better than broad ones. Ranking for twenty of those beats ranking tenth for one big term.

Case 3: steel products website, 63 to 2,342 clicks a month

Starting point: in May 2025 the site had 63 organic clicks and about 4,780 impressions a month. Product pages were thin and didn’t match how buyers search: by specification, size and price.

What we did: rebuilt product pages around specifications and sizes, added clear specification tables, and linked related products and guides so Google could understand the catalogue.

Metric May 2025 March 2026
Organic clicks per month 63 2,342 (over 37 times higher)
Impressions per month About 4,780 About 140,000

Lesson: product pages built around the exact attributes buyers search for did more than any amount of blog content.

Case 4: water heater and kitchen brand, 2,741 to 6,897 clicks a month

Starting point: an established brand with a website, but low organic traffic for the size of its product range.

What we did: optimized product pages for model-specific searches and wrote content answering the practical questions owners search for, such as sizing, installation parts and troubleshooting.

Metric Result after 10 months
Clicks per month From 2,741 to 6,897 at peak (+152%)
Impressions per month Up 326%
Total over the period 51,907 clicks and 1,957,518 impressions
Share of traffic from mobile 77%

Several product searches reached positions 1–2, with click-through rates from 17.6% to 50.2%. The pages bringing the most traffic were practical guides, not product pages: the most-visited page alone brought in 3,002 clicks.

Lesson: owners searching how to fix or size a product are future buyers of parts and replacements. Answering those questions well builds traffic that product pages alone can’t.

Case 5: car accessories store, +458% clicks and a 14% enquiry rate

Starting point: a store selling body kits and accessories, with category pages that didn’t match the “body kit + car model” searches customers actually make.

What we did: built content for each car model, optimized category pages around those searches, and made every page work well on mobile.

  • Organic clicks up 458% in 8 months, peaking at 870 clicks in January 2026.
  • 73% of traffic from mobile.
  • About 130 enquiries from about 900 visits in a typical month, an enquiry rate of roughly 14%.

Lesson: traffic numbers were modest, but because pages matched specific models, a large share of visitors were ready to buy.

Case 6: online English school, to 19,000 visits a month

Starting point: a website with almost no organic visitors, relying on ads for new students.

What we did: took over ongoing website care: technical fixes, content and on-page optimization.

Result: organic traffic grew to more than 19,000 visits a month.

Lesson: steady monthly care compounds. None of the individual changes were dramatic; together they replaced a large part of the paid traffic.

What these cases have in common

  • Specific beats broad. Product sizes, car models, product-plus-area searches: the wins came from matching exactly what buyers type.
  • The basics come first. Categories, accurate details, real photos and complete product pages moved results before anything clever did.
  • We measured actions, not just rankings. Calls, directions, clicks and enquiries are what each client could connect to revenue.
  • Results took months, not weeks. Most of the numbers above are after 6–10 months of steady work.
